BELIZE CITY, Wed. Feb. 2, 2011
Special Constable John Myvette, who was charged with extortion and obtaining property by deception, was freed of the charges when they were dismissed today in the #3 Magistrate's Court.
Magistrate Kayla Teck dismissed the charges because the case has been hanging over Myvette's head for over one year and he was yet to be given disclosure. Also, the prosecution did not give any indication that it was ready to proceed with the trial.
Myvette, who was working at the holding cell at the Magistrate's Court, was accused of obtaining $2,865 from Keon Williams, a.k.a. "Gambis". Williams was charged with an unnatural crime and was remanded into custody at Belize Central Prison. But instead of being taken to prison, Williams was set free.
Williams reported to the police that he gave Myvette the money to secure bail for him at the Supreme Court. The incident occurred in January last year.
