San Pedro and CCC advance to football nationals


Belize City, January 29, 2011

The San Pedro High School girls and the Corozal Community College boys will represent the Northern Division at the upcoming national football tournament to be hosted by the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) at the Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Friday and Saturday, February 11-12.

The teams qualified to the nationals by winning the northern regionals hosted by Orange Walk Technical High School at the People's Stadium in Orange Walk Town on Saturday, January 29.

In Game 1, the San Pedro High School girls advanced to the finals by a 1-0 win over the girls of King's College, who had held them scoreless up to intermission. Samantha Galeano scored the winning goal in the 2nd half.

The Orange Walk Technical High School girls had also advanced to the finals by a 2-1 victory over the girls of Corozal Community College girls. Norelly Terry had scored first for Orange Walk in the 16th minute of play, and the sugar city girls led 1-0 up to the half time break. Rocio Romero equalized for Corozal 8 minutes before the end of the second half and Norelly Terry scored the winning goal in the 4th minute of overtime.

SPHS girls are regional champs

The Corozal Community College boys had advanced to the finals by a 5-3 victory over Belize High School of Agriculture in a penalty shootout, after regulation play ended in a 1-1 draw. Jose Rubi had scored first for Corozal some 15 minutes into the 2nd half, but Osmar Duran had equalized for BHSA in the final minute of regulation time.

Jesse James Smith had scored the winning goal in the 9th minute of overtime for the San Pedro High School boys to advance to the finals by a 1-0 victory over the Orange Walk Technical High School boys.
