Gunmen take $17,000 in Northern Highway assault

Belize City, February 2nd, 2011

A money-exchanger in Corozal is lucky to be alive today after he was attacked while driving on the northern highway by armed men in another vehicle and robbed of $17,000.

The victim is Alex Chan, who has reported to the Police that he was driving his white Geo Prizm car to Santa Clara around 6:30am yesterday.  There he planned to meet someone else to deliver money.

But while driving through Concepcion Village, Chan noticed that a faded-brown color Grand Marquis car with dark, tinted windows was trailing him.  Chan said he accelerated, but the car kept close behind him.

As soon as they exited Concepcion Village, Chan says the trailing car drove up as if to overtake, but instead, rammed his side and drove him off the highway into nearby cane fields.  Suddenly two men, one of Hispanic descent and another of male complexion, exited the vehicle and attacked him.

Chan said one of the men who wore a stocking over his face pointed a sawed-off shotgun and took his waist bag.  The bag contained $26,000 in Mexican currency, $1,200 in U.S. currency, and $9,600 in Belizean currency, totalling $17,000.

But taking the money was not the end of it.  Before leaving, the men beat up Chan and left him in this car.

Police are investigating the incident.
